My favorite car was a 1953 Plymouth. It had
a small 6 cylinder straight engine mounted in a space where everything was easy to get to. When you opened the hood, you could view
the street below surrounding the engine. If the engine wasn't running smoothly you could set the
idle by yourself. And a worst case scenario would be buying a new carburetor for about $40 or a rebuilt one for about
$10 less. I don't know how many miles I got out of a gallon of gas - I recall it was good mileage
but gas was just a few cents a gallon back then and it wasn't that important. My '53 Plymouth was
a four door sedan that easily carried six people. I ran it for about ten years and I did not have any
payments to make for years. Those days are gone and I don't know why Americans went for large engines,
with all the gadgets, - with large monthly payments - but things were more simple in those days just as the cars were.
