Father Gerald J. Bednar, Ph.D, Professor of SystematicTheology
at St Mary's Seminary in Cleveland Ohio, published an article in the Catholic Universe Bulletin from NE Ohio relating
to those who chose to vote for President Obama inspite of Obama's stand on the Right to Life. We will explore this
here since we feel that Father Bednar seems to represent a new "proportional ethics" that has short-circuited the
Right to Life for all.
The following response is taken from a Pro Life group for background information.

Potentially Confusing Article Regarding Catholic Consience and Politics
Father Bednar is an associate pastor at St. Helen
who wrote an article entitled "What does a vote for a candidate mean" in the August 7, 2009 Universe Bulletin. His
article appears to be in direct opposition to the mission statement of HELP, so HELP has sent a response to the Catholic
Universe. We have included images of the newspaper article for your review. Click on the More Info button to access the links
to both pages.

We will be exploring Father Bednar's article from the Universe Bulletin further
at The Rationale Quest at http://www.therationale.com and copy it to our http://tapsearch.com/pope-benedict-economic-encyclical site too. It represents a short circuit in spirituality. Ray Tapajna,

Ray, Thanks for sending along your response to Fr. Bednar's article. Well said! Sad that it met
the fate (not being printed) of many other reasonable and right on replies refuting his proportional reason argument
in defending the decisions of the many "Catholics" who voted for Obama. I have been reading your site and find
it to be a rich mind of wisdom and logic. Peace, Denver Sallee, HELP

Father Bednar review of the Obama does not compute
Letter to UB c/o Fax 696-6519 ( This is copy of our letter
to the U.B that they did not publish. )
We have what is called situational ethics and now Father Bednar
seems to have a new one in proportional ethics. Father Bednar misses the point about the voting for President Obama. Although
Cardinal Newman said everyone must follow their conscience even if their conscience is ill informed, it can never apply to
an intrinsic evil. There is no proportional choice of conscience that can be chosen when something is an intrinsic evil as
abortion is.
Furthermore, G K Chesterton says "The modern world is not evil." He said the modern world
is full of the old Christian virtues gone mad. The virtues have gone mad because they have been isolated from each other
and are wandering alone. I see this isolation when Father Bednar discusses his proportionalism. Pope Benedict's new economic encyclical - Charity is truth, attempts to abstract this isolation for the sake of the common good. The Pope
stresses subsidiarity which I understand to mean that all decisions should be made at the lowest possible level. This certainly
does not apply to the way President Obama does things.
If we applied Father Bednar version of proportional
choice during the holocaust in Germany, we would approve of many Germans choices in the matter as being proportional. This
same scenario applys to voting for President Obama. The holocaust of babies now adds up to about 50 million babies being
killed - many die through the horrible process of partial birth abortion. How can something like partial birth abortion be
absorbed in any proportional choice.
There is also a problem about secluding the voting process to two major parties
assuming that these are the only two proportional choices. Voting for president is not an either - or thing with only two
major parties involved. ( Many say both parties are acting as just one too ). I have not voted for a major presidential
candidate for years and my proportional choices for the office are locked out of the process. Third parties are actively locked
out of the process. It is also obvious that workers have no voice in the process of globalization and free trade and all of
the four last Presidents are part of this lock out too. The right to life seems to have affected human dignity not only at
the beginning of life but in the work day too. Somewhere along the way, we lost the real issue of our times next
to abortion. Both President Obama and Senator McCain ignored the issue of globalization and free trade in their campaigns.
President Obama does not even mention it as he marries big government to big money as our economy based on making money
on money instead of making things is burning out. So I see no validity in Father Bednar's discerning a vote for President
Obama as being a proportional choice when so much is left out of his assessment. The right to life belongs to all of us -
be it being born or having our rightful place in society as a whole. Even Adam Smith eld workers and labor as something sacred
and the core of all society.
The Right to Life includes this too. Proportionals strikes at human dignity
in more ways than one.
